American Fork Court’s Big Mistake That Will Cost Me Thousands
January 8, 2008 – 8:09 amThis is a blog post about American Fork Court’s big mistake that will cost me thousands of dollars and I can’t do anything about it. Ok, this is a rare post that is not related to online marketing, but it sure has got me fired up enough to need to write about it and vent. This is the story of a corrupt credit system that really has consumers at the mercy of others - even when mistakes have been made.
About a year ago my wife received a speeding ticket, she paid the fine, went to a traffic school class, and didn’t think about it again as should have happened. We are getting ready to buy a new home and had the mortgage officer ran our credit reports and we were surprised that there was a $60 collection account from American Fork Court in Utah. After spending a few hours making phone calls and investigating it we found out it was related to her speeding ticket. Next I go and check our checking account and found the check they cashed for the $60 which they sent to collections. We also never received a notice in the mail or anything about the collection account, it was sent to the Utah department of collections.
We called the Utah American Fork Court - Judge Howard Maetani, who must not be that brilliant if he made a stupid mistake like this. I spoke to Trevor who I asked if how they could fix this, he replied “do you mean how YOU are going to fix it, not US, we are not going to do anything”. He said they never received proof that my wife attended the traffic school from the Utah American Fork police department. Naturally I am pretty ticked off at this point and end up calling the American Fork police department. I speak with the clerk at American Fork police department who I ask if I can find out if my wife attended a traffic school class, she simply responds “she is an adult isn’t she?!?!? where is she?” except she really was extremely sarcastic and rude. So my wife calls and finds out they have proof she did attend the class.
Now all that was bad enough, wasting about 8 hours of time all-in-all over a 3 month period. The worst thing is that my wife’s credit score was lowered by more than a 100 points because of a dumb mistake some stupid clerk (and the worse mistakes between American Fork 4th district court and the American Fork police department) made almost a year ago, which when we buy our new we will literally end up spending thousands of dollars more than we would have in interest over the life of the loan. It frustrates me that consumers are so helpless in situations like these, and I have heard of several other similar horror stories. The system is so corrupt it makes me sick. I am VERY glad I do not live in American Fork city (Utah), I could not even imagine how their other services compare if this experience was this bad.

The way to stick it to the system is to never use credit and buy everything cash, although I admit that’s difficult with a house. And I know that sounds strange coming from me, of all people, but I’ve had a change of heart when it comes to debt. I think it’s of the devil.
But the point is if you always pay cash for everything then your credit scored doesn’t matter and you’re free of the system. That’s what I’m working towards, although it may take me a while to get there.

Yes, that would be very nice to do (pay cash for everything). I can’t even imagine not having a mortgage (thats the only loan I do have unfortunately so far)… well I can imagine being without it, just not anytime soon unfortunately. - someday though!
Good luck on your efforts getting to that point too, let me know when you do.

I can COMPLETELY understand your frustration with the American Fork government ’system’ (if you can even call it that). I am currently going through hell with the A.F. 4th district court and the A.F. police department because of mistakes (notice multiple) made by court and county clerks. I took notes during all six phone calls I made during a two hour period, every detail as in names of clerks and time to the minute of each call. I won’t go into too much detail about the original problem (I’d have a novel written if I did) but I will say that I did EVERYTHING I was told to do by the court and police employees but a warrant for my arrest was still issued and I was told “there’s nothing I can do about it so you’d better get in here and pay so you don’t end up in jail”. This all stemmed from a simple traffic ticket. I have never been ‘in trouble with the law’ or anything even close. I pay taxes, keep my car registered, and obey all laws. I was and am disgusted with the incompetence of the American Fork city employees and the city’s unwillingness to take responsibility for the mistakes made by the people they employ. Hopefully this entire mess involving me should be cleared up by next week (fingers crossed) but that doesn’t do anything for the civilians that will inevitably suffer in the future from the stupidity and carelessness of the American Fork City employees. I wish there were something I could do but I’ve tried, and aside from contacting the newspapers, (which I will not hesitate to do if I have ANY more problems with them personally) there isn’t anything I can do. Come to think of it, contacting the papers wouldn’t do much good anyway - they’re all the city’s bitches too. SOOO sorry about your home loan issues caused by the stupidity of A.F. city. I would bet money that you and I spoke on the phone with the exact same idiots. In fact I know we did, you mentioned one in your blog. Argh! It’s a good thing I’m a law abiding citizen and I don’t know how to make pipe bombs. hahahaha Not funny.
