Having been exposed to this in the past, in Utah County imparticular, I think I can shed some light on this "big mistake". When someone signs up for traffic school, they sign a "plea in abeyance" i think it was called, which basically just makes it so the court puts the ticket on hold for you while you go and take traffic school. Now sounds like the traffic school in American Fork is administered through their police department, which is different than where I took it and complicates things further. In the agreement, the court gives you 90 days to take the class and provide proof that traffic school was completed. What also usually falls between the cracks of reading that agreement is that they say that they will suspend $60 of that particular ticket if you go take the traffic schoolm but reinstate it if you don't. Morale of the story number 1: pay attention to anything you sign. So from that point, from the court's position, they will wait 90 days and if they've received the proof of completion of traffic school, they'll dismiss the ticket. If they haven't, they'll reinstate the 60 bones and send it off to debt collection. That's maybe where the clerks passivity in taking action comes from, because on their part, they're done once you sign that thing. Now from the police side, which is where it sounds this thing got all screwed up- They're getting the extra revenue from this traffic school and all they have to do for you is send a completion over to the court. Sounds like they failed to do that, which is ridiculous. Thus the court didn't receive it, and thus the debt collection. What is unfathomable is that the credit system doesn't allow for mistakes like this to be fixed. When I got my second traffic ticket and reluctantly went to traffic school, I made sure that proof was received! Moral of the story #2- when you sign a legally binding document that has implications for your credit or criminal record, make sure it is complied with! Even if that means calling clerks you may not like and ensuring that they took the simple action of sending a proof of something across town. Morale of the story #4- Let it be a lesson to us all of what happens when you ASSUME. It makes an ASS out of U and ME. And for what it's worth, I don't mean to play devil's advocate here, but my understanding of how all this works actually came from a court clerk who was very nice and explained it very well to me. The problem was, I myself screwed up and just missed the deadline that I had agreed to when I signed the stupid thing. Last morale of the story: Live and Learn.

Howard Maetani and Sam Leiter are both idiots. I won't go into details unless someone is really interested, but Sam caught me in entrapment during a Sting on Main street. Long story short, I took them and 3 other officers to trial and proved my innocence using the city's own police video, yet.....Howard Maetani still deemed me as guilty. That idiot needs to open his eyes.

I can COMPLETELY understand your frustration with the American Fork government 'system' (if you can even call it that). I am currently going through hell with the A.F. 4th district court and the A.F. police department because of mistakes (notice multiple) made by court and county clerks. I took notes during all six phone calls I made during a two hour period, every detail as in names of clerks and time to the minute of each call. I won't go into too much detail about the original problem (I'd have a novel written if I did) but I will say that I did EVERYTHING I was told to do by the court and police employees but a warrant for my arrest was still issued and I was told "there's nothing I can do about it so you'd better get in here and pay so you don't end up in jail". This all stemmed from a simple traffic ticket. I have never been 'in trouble with the law' or anything even close. I pay taxes, keep my car registered, and obey all laws. I was and am disgusted with the incompetence of the American Fork city employees and the city's unwillingness to take responsibility for the mistakes made by the people they employ. Hopefully this entire mess involving me should be cleared up by next week (fingers crossed) but that doesn't do anything for the civilians that will inevitably suffer in the future from the stupidity and carelessness of the American Fork City employees. I wish there were something I could do but I've tried, and aside from contacting the newspapers, (which I will not hesitate to do if I have ANY more problems with them personally) there isn't anything I can do. Come to think of it, contacting the papers wouldn't do much good anyway - they're all the city's bitches too. SOOO sorry about your home loan issues caused by the stupidity of A.F. city. I would bet money that you and I spoke on the phone with the exact same idiots. In fact I know we did, you mentioned one in your blog. Argh! It's a good thing I'm a law abiding citizen and I don't know how to make pipe bombs. hahahaha Not funny.

Yes, that would be very nice to do (pay cash for everything). I can't even imagine not having a mortgage (thats the only loan I do have unfortunately so far)... well I can imagine being without it, just not anytime soon unfortunately. - someday though!

Good luck on your efforts getting to that point too, let me know when you do.

The way to stick it to the system is to never use credit and buy everything cash, although I admit that's difficult with a house. And I know that sounds strange coming from me, of all people, but I've had a change of heart when it comes to debt. I think it's of the devil.

But the point is if you always pay cash for everything then your credit scored doesn't matter and you're free of the system. That's what I'm working towards, although it may take me a while to get there.
